Welcome to Chinatown NYC: Chinese Immigration & NYC

The Peopling of New York City: Chinese Communities is the culmination of a semester-long study of Chinese-Americans in New York City. We worked together as a group in Dr. Gardner's Seminar 2 course at the Macaulay Honors College, and dedicated ourselves to the in-depth study of various neighborhoods where the Chinese populations are concentrated. We focused on Chinatown in Manhattan, Flushing in Queens, and Sunset Park/ 8th Avenue in Brooklyn. Each of these neighborhoods has a unique history and demography that overlaps with each of the other neighborhoods. Refer to the navigation bar to learn more about how Chinese immigrants have influenced these neighborhoods, what traditions they have integrated into American culture, and how they have grown to represent a powerful minority in New York.
