From From the Island to the City: Dominican Communities in New York City
Jen Gieseking is a Ph.D. candidate in environmental psychology at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Her research focuses on the production of lesbians' and queer women's urban spaces and places in New York City from 1983 to 2008 in order to understand what the shifts say about their changing experiences of justice and oppression. Her previous work has examined how the physical, social, and historical campus is affected and reflected in the identity development of its students and alumnae spanning generations throughout the 20th century. She is interested in the sociocultural production and private/public aspects of everyday spaces of identity with a special focus on sexuality and gender, the right to the city and the right to design and produce the city, cognitive and mental mapping methodologies, and feminist and queer pedagogy. She is holding or has held fellowships from Instructional Technology Fellows Program at Macaulay Honors College CUNY, Writing Across the Curriculum Program at Hunter College CUNY, The Center for Place, Culture, and Politics, the Summer Institute for Geographers of Justice, and the Woodrow Wilson Women's Studies Dissertation Fellows Program. She has performed research with the Public Space Research Group of the Center for Human Environments. She is presently completing two papers on the mental mapping methodology.
