Hi I'm Alice Moy (pretty obvious, this is my bio!)

Me!

From One Student to Another:
It is nearing the end of my first year at Baruch College and life is good :). I really enjoy the college experience--great people and a lot of opportunities and events to take advantage of! I am currently a writing tutor at Baruch's Student Academic Consulting Center I plan to be a part of TEAM Baruch. I hope to always be able to give back to my school community. Academically, I anticipate getting into the Zicklin School of Business by next spring (I'm leaning towards a management major for now). I am also thinking of a creative writing minor.

In front of my ancestral home, with relatives and villagers. I'm the one wearing the green blouse. Among those sitting, my dad is second from the left, and my infamous grandaunt is on his right! (Picture taken on January 2008, on my winter break trip to HK and China)
My Background

I was born and raised in Manhattan. However, my parents are both Chinese immigrants. My father was born in Guong Zhou, China but he was raised mostly in Hong Kong. I do not know much about the people from my dad's side. My great grandfather supposedly had a business in Cuba and was able to speak fluent Spanish (a skill I wish for). My grandfather died before I was born and I do not know much about him. He came to the U.S. and brought his children here a few at a time. As young adults, most of them already went to Chinese universities, but they also obtained degrees from American colleges. My aunts and uncles from my dad's side were/are either professors or in professional fields in the U.S. They set a huge standard for me to live up to, but I will prevail! My dad and grandmother were the last of my intermediate family to come to America. My father had formal schooling in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and attended several colleges/universities in NYC, including Baruch!

My mom was born and raised in Taishan, a village in southern China. My aunts and uncles from my mom's side live in New York City, and my cousins are all in elementary school. I am very close to my mom's relatives because they have a more traditional, collective family identity. It is funny how my mom is the oldest of her siblings, and my dad is the youngest. My dad brought my mom to America after meeting her. They are both American citizens. While not quite assimilated, they do enjoy many American values, like the occasional fast food and eating out on weekends. They are also far from the restrictive, overbearing parents of my Asian peers. My parents value independent thought and freedom while instilling in me essential human values.

Most of my mom's relatives are in the U.S., but a few are still in mainland China or HK. During the past winter break, I went to HK/China and also went to see my ancestral house. My very old grandaunt is my sole relative still living there! It was interesting to see how southern China has modernized since my last visit, at the age of 8.
