Harlem Brownstone

Black Neighborhoods before Harlem (Noorulain Siddiqui)

The black population of New York City had not always been concentrated into one area, as it was during the Harlem Renaissance. Prior to that time, there were quite a few distinct black communities, small and large, that were spread out across the boroughs of Brooklyn and Manhattan.

How Harlem Became Black (Noorulain Siddiqui)

Harlem was a small town that was initially not a part of New York City. It eventually became a part of the city and went through many population changes to become a haven for black social and cultural life.
