About Me: My name is Dmitry Kucher and I am currently a lower sophomore in the CUNY Honors College at Baruch College majoring in Finance and Investments. I went to Brooklyn Technical High School with a major in Social Science Research. I am a 19 year old male living in Brooklyn. I am a hard worker and have strong analytical skills. I try to approach any project or task I am involved in from a holistic point of view. I feel that a project is only done when all perspectives were taken into consideration and have been exhausted. To that end I tend to complicate things to a high degree. My hobbies include swimming, bike riding and reading. I am involved on campus through a volunteer organization called VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance), am the Class of 2011 Representative to the USC (University Scholars Council), am a member of FES (Finance and Economics Society), and am a member of PES (Phi Eta Sigma). I believe that being involved in extracurriculars makes you a well-rounded person and academics is not the only aspect of college that students should focus on.

Background: My journey to the United States is a long one. I was born in Kiev, Ukraine on April 4th, 1989. My family is Jewish and during 1989 life in Ukraine was not pleasant for Jews. Jews were victims of anti-semitic actions. It was not safe being a Jew in Ukraine, so my family had to find a way out. One refuge was the United States. We were not able to hop on an airplane like so many other immigrants, instead we had to take the long road.

My family made pit stops for two months apiece in Austria and Italy before finally making it to the United States a few days before my first birthday. Everyone in my family are religious refugees and we have been here for 18 years. I am a first generation Jewish immigrant and consider myself fully assimilated into the American mainstream society. I know about the difficulties of being an immigrant from my parent's testimonials.

I was raised in Bensonhurst in Brooklyn. I have been exposed to two cultures throughout my life: my parent's and America's. Although I never have been to Ukraine since my family originally left, I still feel a connection to my homeland. I call myself American, eat American food, speak the "American" language, and yet I have found a way to still feel connected to my birthplace. This I attribute mainly to my parents and grandparents. One day I plan to visit Kiev, Ukraine to witness the place where my parents grew up. Although my loyalty is and always will be with the United States, I can not fully shed my past.
