Hey guys! In this “Arts in NYC” class, I feel like we’ve been focusing more on the “Arts” part, and less on the “in NYC” part. So for the last few weeks of the class, I thought it would be interesting to get to know more about the city itself, where we’ve seen so many examples of different kind of art throughout the semester. To that end, I propose two tours, that will hopefully teach us a little more about the city where we live, work, learn and play, and yes, even sometimes take for granted.

Option 1: EAST VILLAGE 101
(http://www.avenuea.org/ev/tour/index.shtml)

This is a crash course in East Village/Lower East Side history. From the farmlands of the 1600s and the wealthy estates of the 1700s, to immigration, tenements, the “melting pot,” how the East Village became a haven for artists and counter culturalists in the twentieth century, and everything in between. Also learn about how recent commercial development and gentrification is the changing landscape of the East Village and surrounding neighborhoods.

Tuesdays at 11AM (During class time!!)
Price: $15

Option 2: Tour of Grand Central Neighborhood(http://www.grandcentralpartnership.org/what_we_do/promote_free_tour.asp)

Most of us zoom by Grand Central every day taking the 6 to Hunter, without ever thinking about the treasure trove of information above our heads. This is our chance to discover the architecture and social history of the Grand Central neighborhood. We can learn the secrets of the Whispering Gallery in Grand Central Terminal, gaze upon the hubcaps and the roadsters on the side of the Chrysler Building, discover the favorite Midtown Manhattan hangout of Mercury, Hercules, and Minerva, learn why Pershing Square isn’t really square, circle the globe in a matter of seconds like Superman, or visit the original Lincoln Memorial by Daniel Chester French.

Fridays at 12:30 PM
Price: Free!!!
