Emerging Artists Exhibit at Socrates Sculpture Park.
This event, located in Long Island City, features works by various artists who have each been awarded a grant to build their own individual projects and display them in the park. The artists who have works displayed in this exhibit are not critically heralded and well know ones, but rather “emerging” artists, as the name connotes. Because of the frequency of class discussion which beg the question “just because this is famously considered to be art, does that make it good?” I think that it would be valuable for our class too views some things, which have not been popularly acclaimed as good art, so that we may make that decision internally. Admission is free and there are also other exhibits, which can be viewed in the park. Socrates Sculpture Park is outdoors (as it is a park) and is located near the water on the N/W lines. It closes at sunset.
“I’m Not There” at Film Forum from November 21st.
I’m Not There is a film about the life of Bob Dylan, in which 6 different actors have been cast to play Bob Dylan at different stages in his life. This movie has been described as “non-linear” and “so daring and so inventive”. It would be a valuable event for our CHC class to attend not only because of the plot’s depiction of an American icon, but also because of the unusual choices in cinematography, casting, and directing. Our class hasn’t really had much focus on popular culture, music and film, and I think that such a focus could provide a nice novelty. Also David Cross plays Allen Ginsberg.
