The Joan and Alan Bernikow Jewish Community Center of Staten Island

The Jewish Community Center movement started in 1854. Originally called the Young Mens Hebrew Association (YMHA), its purpouse was to help Jewish immigrants enter North American society by teaching them English and provide a place for Jewish culture. As the Jewish comminty in NA developed, the purpouse of the centers changed. The JCCs have always been open to everyone, regardless of race, religion, etc.Presently, the JCCs run programming and education tailored for Jews, but also has many programs relevant to people who aren't Jewish, and all facilities can be used by any member. The JCC aims to cultivate a diverse range of vies and promote harmony in the community (the cultural community and the community as a whole). (More information at http://www.jcca.org/about_us.html )

Several people were interviewed regarding the JCC and its role in the community. All felt that the JEC reflected, at least to some degree, Jewish culture. The expressions of Jewish culture include programs and art. All also felt that it was an open institution that welcomes everyone. One person expressed concern that the JEC may, in its efforts to be open to everyone, may have somewhat infringed on its Jewish nature. The JCC was also said to play a role in the culture of the community, as its programs generally have jewish content, and it provides a gathering place for the community.
