Victor: This is great-can someone send me this file via e-mail? I have an idea for the opening page.

Contents

Christina with a Problemmm

Okay, for some reason, no matter WHAT I do, this file will not upload. It's 11.8 MB, and its an .swf file, and it will NOT upload at all. It looks like it will, and then the page refreshes itself, and nothing happens. I've tried this 8 times on like 12 different computers and made like 11 different flash files and nothing works :-( Anything I can do? Send the file to you so you can try it or something? Thanks.

Jonathan And Pictures

You may find all the pictures I've taken at jon_pic_page... Ilya, I think these are most useful for you... Victor! The rest of the pics/movies are in there!

Victor

...Now that's just creepy.......... GET A LIFEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Jon: ....We're dieing here and you're fooling around with photoshop! YOU DO THE WORK!

Christina: From Prof Napoli:
"I did. This is great!

More!

Add a photo of Victor to yours."

So I did XD

DO YOUR WORK!!!

And you know I love you guys XD

And I OFFERED to help, Victor!!!

Victor: How do I get a restraining order....?

Christina: I propose a truce, since I really need to get my work done and can't procrastinate purely for your entertainment.
And it wasn't my idea. Fun-o-Wiki was. The rest I blame on Professor Napoli!! XD

My Public Apology to Victor: "I'm sorry, I had no idea that Christina was to blame!"

Christina: XD I still think we should keep one of the many Fun-o-Wiki banners on our home page. I mean, they're totally brilliant XD

Victor

Victor's contribution...

The Cite feature is now installed and working[1]. All you do is enter the text you want for the reference or footnote between the tags <ref> and </ref>, and then at the bottom of the page, add the tag <references/> (if you neglect to add this, then the notes won't show up anywhere). Good going! --John

What browser will we be using to show off our wikis? Because the pages look VERY different based on whether you are using Firefox, Safari, IE, or AOL, and I wanna make sure I'm formatting my pages correctly.
I vote for Firefox, since it seems the most streamlined for me, but I just wanna make sure.
Thanks :)!
John: We should always plan on Firefox, since that is the browser that is most common cross-platform (PC and Mac).

Susan 05.03.08

Are we really...using this as a design? haha Nice job, Christina!

?

I know I am not suppose to write here, but I was shocked when I first log in and see the beautiful art of Christian...*cough* - Charissa

Phil 050208

Just a Note

With permission from Professor Napoli-
We're converting the "In The Classroom" page into a sort of In-The-Classroom/General-Question-Blog
Incase we have any questions about the impending projects which don't involve the individual community pages.
Or, if they are directed for everyone... post them on that page!

Check it out!

Welcome to Seminar 2 Wiki - The Peopling of New York City

Please place new notes at the top of the page. :)

Neighborhood Research

Phil: A very useful resource for finding and understanding NYC landmarks is: http://www.neighborhoodpreservationcenter.org/index.html

This has a database of the landmarking reports for all over NYC.

Jonathan L.: In case anyone was interested, here is a link to the Library of Congress website, where I'm sure you can find a ton of primary sources.
Christina S.: To find your community, just search for it. And a reminder to my group members: add all your notes to that page! That way everything can be organized in one location :D

Resources for Studying the Hispanic Community of New York

I've created a page called "Hispanic Community" with resources for you to use in preparing your first short research paper.

Anyone know how to edit the name of a page? I accidentally titled this page "Hispanic Comunity."

I also don't know how to create navigation to this page, or the neighborhood pages I created. If anyone does, feel free!! In the mean time, to find this page, use search to find "Hispanic."

Happy Valentine's Day Everyone!

Hope you all have a great day :D!

OUR NEIGHBORHOODS ARE!

Note from Phil (and follow up from John)

I hate to mess up John's nice page, but I have created 4 pages where I have stuck some basic starting points for each group. So, there is a "Bensonhurst Notes" page, and a "Bay Ridge Notes" page, and so on.

I'll be putting stuff up there that I think might be helpful to your groups as we go along.

The first place to start all of your work on your neighborhoods is the worldcat database, available through the BC Library site.

And don't forget to do a search of the New York Times Historical Edition, also through the Library site!

I will want to schedule walks through each of your neighborhoods with you. These will probably have to take place on Sunday afternoons. The sooner we take these first exploratory walks, the better!

Follow up from John: I added the pages that Phil created to the navigation at the left.

What is a Wiki?

  • wiki – (def.) Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser. Wiki supports hyperlinks and has a simple text syntax for creating new pages and crosslinks between internal pages on the fly. Wikipedia is probably the best known wiki, and is powered by MediaWiki, the same software that powers our wiki.
  • A wiki is unique among group communication mechanisms in that it allows all users to create and edit its content.
  • Wiki wiki means “rapidly” in Hawaiian

Advantages of a Wiki over a Traditional html Page

A wiki is a dynamic website that allows multiple users to edit it at the same time from different computers and different locations. This is not generally possible with a static website. A wiki is an ideal environment for collaboration on large projects, since users can edit and comment on each other's content, and users are able to see who contributed what.

The greatest advantage, however, is that it is on the most cutting edge of softwares used in classrooms today. Columbia University has been using wikis creatively and meaningfully through their Center for New Media Teaching and Learning (CNMTL).

Most importantly, many Seminar 2 projects have become wiki-based projects, so this workshop will get you started in thinking broadly and creatively on how "Web 2.0" can enhance your learning experience.

A Wiki Challenge :)

A wiki is not "wysiwyg" ("what you see is what you get," another term for on-screen formatting) so you will need to learn some of the basic formatting for text, such as creating headings and bullets, and formatting links. However, you get used to these commands quickly, and you can find help by following the links on the help page. Under Getting Started (below) you will also find a link for tips on formatting. You can always click on "show preview" to see if you have the desired formatting was achieved, but be sure to click "save" to confirm your changes. You can also "revert" your page to a previous state as a means of undoing changes that your have confirmed.

Getting Started

Be sure to create your account by clicking the "Login/Create Account" link at the top of the page. You must be logged in to edit content on the wiki, but a user does not need to be logged in to read content.

Create your own page introducting yourself to the community. On it, you can add not only text content, but also photo galleries, YouTube videos, and GoogleMaps. I created a See bio page as an example of what you can do. Below are some helpful links to orient you to MediaWiki's interface.
