Devorah Rostker

April 28th, 2009

My name is Devorah Rostker, and my bio is nothing special. I was born in New York, raised in New York, and for now at least, I’m staying in New York. I live in Queens, in a little place known as Far Rockaway, and it’s a nice ride into Brooklyn for school every day. But that’s not what makes me a New Yorker. What does, you ask? Well, for one thing, I like cheesecake. I enjoy bagels, I double park all the time, and, when I need to intimidate people, I know how to tawk like a New Yawka.

On a less obnoxious note, though, I also have real valid reasons for loving New York. I love that no one ever looks twice- you have to be weird to fit in. We come from a billion different walks of life, and we all know how to do our own thing, but we have shown that when the time calls for unity and collective strength, we can channel our force of diversity towards something that is much greater than the sum of its parts. And I know that all people west of the Mississippi think that we are just snobby and self absorbed; but let’s be honest- they’re just jealous.

I’m also fortunate to live in a super great neighborhood, with a wonderful community to boot. I get the intimacy of a small town, with Manhattan just a train ride away! And I get to look down at wacky tourists, especially when they tell me that they live on a farm! All for one low price! Does it get better than that?

I sometimes wonder what I would be like if I grew up in Cleveland, perhaps, or Seattle. My imagination runs wild but each time, I come back to the same ending- it is me standing in JFK International airport, thankful to finally be somewhere where no explanation is ever needed; where boredom is never tolerated, and where general rules of conduct are never enforced. The city so nice, they named it twice? I think so. And that is that.

    “My bio is nothing special.”

Nonsense! I’ve only known you for a few months and I know it is not true.
