Joe Sanchez

Joe Sanchez was a police officer in New York City during the 1970s. He spoke in depth about the turbulent, crime-ridden city he lived in. Since police officers were not well paid, Mr. Sanchez spoke of rampant corruption in the police force. Mr. Sanchez also spoke of how the police department chose to ignore some of the crimes that took place in the city. Once Mr. Sanchez had information on a bank robbery that was to take place in Williamsburgh, Brooklyn. Mr. Sanchez informed a senior police official about the information he had, and the senior official responded by saying that “Let them kill each other in the ghetto; this is not Park Avenue.” This illustrates how badly New Yorkers were affected by the fiscal crisis. We thank him very much for his willingness to speak with us.
