This page will include tips and links we've discussed in workshops over the course of the semester.

1. When you click the "edit" tab on a page--which is only visible after you've logged in--you will see a toolbar with buttons for adding bold, italic, internally linked, externally linked, and large/headline formatted text. You will also see buttons for inserting a picture, inserting media, adding a mathematical formula, ignoring wiki formatting in a selected text, adding a signature and inserting a horizontal line.

2. To find a page, you can always go to "Special Pages," "List of Pages," and "All Pages." If someone has created a page that is not linked on our Main Page, it will show up here.

3. To create a page: type the title of the page you want to create under "Search," then click the link that says "create new page." Don't forget to create a link for the page on our Main Page.

4. Creating an internal link--use the button in the toolbar (see number 1 above) or enclose the text you want to link with double brackets, here's an example. If you want to add the hyperlink to certain words that will then link to the page, rather than linking the page name itself, you can use the format name of link.

5. To add an external link--use the button in the toolbar (see number 1 above) or enclose the text you want to link with single brackets, [like so.] To add the hyperlink to a name of the page that is not the same as the page's address, use the following format-- Google

6. To insert your own photos (not from flickr), you need to follow two steps. First you need to use "Upload File" in the Toolbox on the left side of the page. Pay close attention to how you title your photo because you will need to maintain the exact same capitalization, punctuation and spelling when inserting it on the page. Then, similar to the way you create an internal link, you enclose the following in double brackets .

 • To change the size of an image, use the following pattern:
 • To change the alignment of an image, use the following pattern:
 • To make an image a thumbnail, use the following pattern:

7. Click here for instructions on embedding video from YouTube or images from flickr.

8. Click here to see instructions on making Google maps and embedding them in the wiki.

9. Click here for instructions on using citations.

10. To add an mp3, use the format: <flashmp3>filename.mp3|parameter=value|...</flashmp3>. The mp3 must be uploaded to the wiki or from an external url. The parameters affect how the mp3 will play.

 • autostart=yes The player will automatically open and start to play the track (default value is no)
 • loop=yes The track will be looped indefinitely (default value is no)

11. To put a photo on your page, position it and include a caption, you can use syntax like this

12. To include a number of smaller photos on a page, perhaps along the bottom or in a separate section, you can create a gallery. Check out this page--and click on 'edit'--to see how I did it.
