Hong Kong Supermarket

The enormous Hong Kong Supermarket in Sunset Park is conveniently located right across the street from the 8th Avenue train station on the N line. The Hong Kong Supermarket is part of a national chain that started in California and has locations in several New York City Chinatowns. It is a specialty store which has a wide variety of Asian, as well as traditionally American foods.

According to the New York Times, "Hong Kong [Supermarket] is a terrific market -- clean and vast with high quality meats and vegetables -- but also an amusing clash of cultures. Kosher dill pickles share an aisle with curry pastes. Campbell's soups stare across at fermented mixed vegetables. There are Korean kimchi, oyster sauces, dried salted fish, Chinese bean curd skins, Italian olive oils and dried shrimp paste." [1]

Other Stores

Although the majority of stores in Sunset Park are Chinese supermarkets and grocery stores, there are some stores that indicate the presence of other cultures. The large Hispanic population that dominates 4th to 2nd Avenues also has some presence on 8th. Also, the start of a Muslim community is apparent with several storefront mosques and a Halal meat supplier located on 7th and 8th Avenues.
