From The Peopling of New York City

Alex Nizhikhovskiy is a student at the Macaulay Honors College at the City College of New York. Going as far back middle school he has had an interest in the construction field. By his junior year at Brooklyn Technical High School Alex had decided upon architecture as a career path. Attending a prestigious high school like Brooklyn Tech gave Alex the option of majoring in architecture and further exploring his interests. However, yearning to get as much exposure as possible to his field of interest, Alex took advantage of a number of opportunities offered to him.

The first of these was the chance to take a course in Construction Management at Polytechnic University during the spring semester of his junior year. Alex excelled at this course, and took advantage of the opportunity to learn about architecture and construction from more of a construction point of view, rather than from the design side.

The other opportunity that Alex explored was the chance to intern for a summer at an architecture firm. Through the New York School Construction Authority Summer Internship Program Alex was placed in a firm for a six-week internship during the summer after his junior year of high school. However, at the end of that internship Alex was offered the opportunity to continue working at the firm. He is now entering his third summer working at Montoya-Rodriguez Architects, P.C.

Knowing that architecture was what he wanted to do in life, City College seemed like an obvious choice for Alex. Its well known and renown architecture major coupled with the opportunity to be a part of the Macaulay Honors College was too good of an opportunity to pass. Alex is currently completing his first of five years of architecture school and is surer of his career choice than ever before. He is also happily taking advantage of the opportunities offered to him by the Honors College. In fact, he plans to use his study grant funds for a trip to New Orleans this summer, to work with Habitat for Humanity in the Hurricane Katrina recovery process. Alex sees this as an opportunity, not only to help people in need, but also to learn more about the architecture field through hands-on construction.
