Victoria Ebin has carried out research on Senegalese migration to France and New York for many years. As an anthropologist at a French research institute in Senegal, she made a study of Senegalese Sufis from 1990 to 1993, returning to live there as a Fulbright fellow a few years later. During this time, she made a documentary film on a Senegalese Sufi brotherhood called the Baraka des marchands Mourides.for French television.

While living in Senegal, she became involved in AIDS and now works for the Guttmacher Institute and other international health organizations; through this work she travels to Africa several times a year to organize seminars on AIDS for African journalists. She was formerly a curator of African art at the Brooklyn Museum and worked at the American Museum of Natural History. She has a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Cambridge and a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University.
