From The Peopling of New York City: Indian Communities

Jump to: navigation, search
According to Maxine Fisher, as early as in 1975, approximately half of the Indian language groups published monthly or quarterly newsletters that were either entirely or partially in the native language of the group. That number has only grown since. The newspapers keep the community together by informing members of events. The newspapers provide information on how Indian immigrants can stay in touch with their culture, by having advertisements for such things as places to buy saris and spices, to places they can eat and Indian doctors they can go to. One of the newspapers in release right now is News India Times. Advertisements in News India Times can be viewed on their online edition. This newspaper informs its readers of current events, just as any other paper. But it also focuses on the Indian community, by providing its readers with certain articles that focus on accomplishments of members in the community, or problems Indian immigrants face in the United States.

Another paper in release is Desi Talk in New York. Both the online edition and the print edition of Desi Talk in New York have advertisements for places that sell Indian food products and for restaurants that are in the New York area. The newspaper serves to show immigrants things that are occurring back in the home country. For instance, one day there was an article on a fashion show in India. The paper also shows what is happening in the local community. For instance, there are articles on such things as Indian dance competitions. To the right of this page, there are photographs of Indian newspapers and magazines being sold in stores in New York City.
