Our agency’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) has proven over the years to be extremely effective in placing teen-agers on summer vacation who need to find gainful employment and participate in communal activities during the months of July and August. This year, COJO of Flatbush placed over 1,200 teen-age residents of NYC, ages 14 to 21, in various interesting positions. Boys and girls receive minimum wage ($6.75 per hour) for 25 hours of work per week, for a period of 7 weeks. This means that teen-agers earned close to $1,200 each at their summer jobs. This initiative has existed for several years, and has enabled community youths from local families of all income levels to work during the summer, offering them career guidance, orienting them to the world of work, placing them in jobs that teach them valuable skills, academic and experiential learning.
