Between 1885-1914 there were over 150 Yiddish dailies, weeklies, monthlies, quarterlies, festival journals, and yearbooks. In the Old Country, Russian Jews couldn’t or didn’t read any Yiddish newspapers. YOU NEED A SENTENCE HERE THAT INTRODUCES AND DEFINES THE FORWARD. Journalist Abe Cahan of the Forward promoted socialism AND Americanization. He spoke of “desirable” qualities and manners. The newspaper taught American geography and history, and advised Jewish boys to learn baseball. One of the Forward’s innovations was letters from readers. They asked for advice about poverty, sickness, love and divorce, unemployment, intermarriage, socialism, generational conflicts & declining religious observance. The Forward incorporated English words to enhance the speaking process.

One of today's Yiddish Newspapers, "Aglemeiner," is illustrated below. It has been running for fifty-five years. "Algemeiner," translated into English means "for everybody."
