Mariel Boat Lift
Between April 15 and October 31st in 1980 a mass migration of Cubans entered the US through an event called the Mariel Boatlift. Hector Sanyusitz and three other men decided to carry out a plot in which they rammed a bus into the Peruvian embassy. Due to all the struggle one Cuban guard was accidentally fatally shot. These men were granted Asylum by Peruvian diplomat Ernesto Pinto-Bazurco. Castro wanted the men returned to go on trial for the death of the guard but Pinto-Bazurco refused. On April 4th Castro pulled back all his guards from the Peruvian Embassy which set up the catalyst for the Mariel Boatlift and the new comers called Marielitos.
