Classic Film Scene - "Bringing Up Baby"

Hi everyone,

I'll post my thoughts on the museum later, but for now I wanted to share a video clip with you. I was so excited yesterday to see a clip from one of my all-time favorite movies, Bringing Up Baby (1938), starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant playing at the museum. I was also surprised because I had never really thought of this movie as being very sexually explicit or even suggestive, save for this one scene. It's not the one that was playing at the museum, but it is quite famous because, according to Wikipedia (I know, that shouldn't be my go-to source, but hey, sometimes it's useful), it is "the first work of fiction, aside from pornography, to use the word 'gay' in a homosexual context." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bringing_Up_Baby) I was shocked when I first heard Cary Grant say, in 1938, "I just went gay all of a sudden," and assumed that he must have meant something different, although given the fact that he was wearing a negligee in the scene, I didn't know how he could have - and apparently he meant exactly what I thought he meant! Anyway, the whole movie is great, and I highly recommend it!

Similar Surprise

The first time I saw Bringing up Baby I had the same response.  I could not believe that such an early film would be so blunt.  I have this same sort of surprise when I watch Breakfast at Tiffany's.  I cannot believe that I am watching Mickey Rooney play a Japanese photographer, Mr. Yunioshi, to seemingly offensive comic perfection.  We think we're bold now, but the tradition is deep-seated...
