From The Peopling of New York City

Little Africa in the Big City

New York City skyscape.

There’s no place like New York City, that’s a proven fact. Nowhere else can you find such a diverse and culturally rich group of people in the world. Staten Island is one of the boroughs where we see evidence of this. As mentioned earlier, we embarked on our quest to study the West African immigrants on Staten Island. In this section we are going to delve into how they make ‘Staten Africa’ their new home. What good is coming to a new place if you can’t call it home anyway? As you follow us through this section you will learn how Nigerians, Ghanaians, and Liberians bring over aspects of their culture from Mother Africa such as strong family ties, food, clothing, music and etc. to make their new Little Africa. Doing so enables them to embellish a cultural identity that gives them the best of both worlds as well as giving us an insight to another culture that we can relate to in a number of ways. Enjoy the trip across Little Africa made possible for the world by the Big Apple.
