Creating content

WikiText

Wiki pages are created in Wikitext, which is a simplified markup language.

When editing you can also use the toolbar buttons at the top of the box to create basic text. But should you want to do something specialized, use the links below to help you figure out how to make it happen.

Uploading files

You may upload files from your computer to insert into your wiki.

  • Permitted image file types: png, gif, jpg, jpeg

When uploading files, give a descriptive "destination filename." For e.g. "JohnFamily.jpg" and not "IMG_012" Where possible, provide a summary of the photo, i.e. a description of the photo, where and when it was taken etc.

  • Permitted audio file types: mp3

Please do not upload movie files as they take up too much server space. Upload your movie on Youtube, Vimeo or Google Video and embed accordingly.

Images

To insert an image from your computer, make sure your file has been uploaded to the wiki.

To use an image or other file which has been uploaded to the wiki, use:

[[Image:Example.jpg]]

Make sure you type the file name accurately. If you named the file you uploaded as "JohnFamily.jpg" then you must specify the file name as such in the page you created. E.g., it won't recognize "johnfamily.jpg" (no caps).

See this guide to help you format your image layout using wikitext.

Embedding MP3 files

To insert an mp3 file from your computer, make sure your file has been uploaded to the wiki.

If you would like your mp3 file to play in an embedded file, type the file name in between the following code:

<mp3player>File:EXAMPLE.mp3</mp3player>

The above code will give you this: The player will show in this paragraph

Embedding Youtube Videos

If you want to embed a video on the wiki, simply copy and paste the embed code provided, enclosing it with the html tags at the beginning and end of the code.

For example, by typing the following

<html>INSERT YOUTUBE EMBED CODE HERE</html>

a video will be embedded as such:

Embedding Google Maps

The same rule to Embedding Youtube Videos applies to embedding Google Maps--as well as any HTML object--as well. To embed a Google map, copy and paste the embed code provided and enclose it with HTML tags.

For example, by typing the following:

<html>INSERT MAP EMBED CODE HERE</html>

a map will be embedded as such:

Citing Sources

Citations on our wiki will be formatted as footnotes. Here's how to insert footnotes into your text:

First, create a heading at the bottom of your page, something like ==footnotes== or ==citations==, under which your footnotes will be listed (the equal signs are what makes it a heading, you recall)

Beneath that heading, place a marker that tells the wiki where to place the footnotes. You can do this by typing the following on the line below the notes heading:

Enclose the sentence to which you want to insert a footnote with <ref> and <ref> tags, so it looks like this:

According to Jennifer 8 Lee, Chinese food should be considered as an all-American food.<ref>Lee, Jennifer 8. The Fortune Cookie Chronicles. New York: Grand Central Publishing, 2009.<ref>

The result:

According to Jennifer 8 Lee, Chinese food should be considered as an all-American food.[1]

Editing Menubar

Each group has been assigned its own page. You are able to create pages that can be listed as a drop down menu under your group page. Here's how:

Go to http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/chin10/Mediawiki:Sidebar You will see a menu that looks something like this:

* navigation
** mainpage|mainpage-description
** About_Us|Who We Are
** recentchanges-url|recentchanges
** helppage|help
* Group One
** Group_One|Group One
* Group Two
**Group_Two|Group Two
* Group Three
**Group_Three|Group Three
* Help
** helppage|help
** Tutorial|Workshop: March 18 (Getting Started)
** Apps|Workshop: April 8 (Apps)

The item that begins with * is the root menu i.e. the title that appears on the menubar Items that begin with ** are pages that appear below the specified root menu If you want to add a page under Group One, type ** followed by the page name (what appears agter, pipe (|) and the title you want to appear on the root menu. For example:

*Group One
** food|Tastes of Chinatown

("food" is the page name i.e. http:// macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/chin10/food; "Tastes of Chinatown" is the title that will appear on the drop down menu below "Group One")
