From The Peopling of New York City

Here's what I found so far

During the searching process I had encountered many failures in finding any information on my five individuals.

1. I started my research in census books at the New York Public Library. Unfortunately I couldn't find any of the names in the lists. I will need to search family members as soon as I could get some names.

2. After three hours of book searching and no information, I looked at census data online in hope to find the victims. Yet again, I ended up at a dead end. I checked on ancestry.com and heritage.com under all the names provided in the book and other names I found elsewhere. Here is the list of the names I typed into the search engines:

Mary Laventhal: Leventhal Loventhal Laventhol Lowenthol Levinthal

3. Finally I found something when I visited the Municipal Archives. With Amy's help I had the death certifcates of three people. So here's what I found:

Death certificate Number: 10147, Theodore Rottner,
    age: 22 years old,
    Martial status: single,
    occupation: shirtmaker,
    born in: Russia,
    time in the U.S. : 5 years,
Father: Morris Rottner, also born in Russia
    Mother: Sarah Rosenborn also Russian

Death certificate Number: #####, Ida Jakaofsky
    age: 19 years old,
    Martial status: single,
    occupation: shirtmaker,
    born in: Russia,
    time in the U.S. : 6 years,
Father: Sam Jakaofsky also born in Russia
Mother: Ethel Jakaofsky also born in Russia
    Buried: Holy Trinity Cemetry, 3/27/1911

Death certificate Number: #####, Mary Loventhal
    age: 22 years old,
    Martial status: single,
    occupation: book keeper,

time in the U.S. : life
Father: Benjamin Loventhal born in Russia
Mother: Martha A. Solomon also born in Russia

I also believe I have found some information on Clotilde Terranova, but the info doesn't match with the one in the book:

Research Proposal for peopling of New York, but I ended up doing Triangle!!!

I found, by all means, Jill Lepores’ book the most interesting and thrilling compared to the other readings. Thus, I have come to an agreement to continue learning more about the story of the slave conspiracy and exploring the depths of the ordinary lives of slave owners from the 18th century. I would conduct my research on the slave owners and probably their generations afterwards to conclude upon my findings and other evidence in any historical texts or artifacts left behind by these normal individuals if they did or not benefit or profit from owning slaves. I have chosen my list of 10-15 slave owners arbitrarily from the list provided by Lepore. They are in order by last name, Samuel Bayard (a merchant), Elizabeth Carpenter (a butcher), John Jr, Cruger (Mayor), James Delancey (a lawyer), William English, Dr. James Henderson (a doctor), John hunt (a mariner), Katherine Kipp (cordwainer), Capt. Robert Jr. Livingston (a lawyer), Coln. John Moore (a merchant), Adolph Philipse (a merchant) and John Roosevelt (a house painter). Another reason to why I have chosen to study the history of slave owners from the 18 century is my deep interest in American history during the pre-colonial and colonial times. For reasons I cannot explain, the “antiquity” aspects of such a historical time sparks in me an excitement and interest on exploring more about the people and the way they lived in early American history. Furthermore, there is also the fact about me that I don’t favor more recent or modern history since modern history is easier to relate to, in other words, I can easily picture how homes were made, what shops sold, how cars and planes looked like, and how people dressed; whereas, an older history requires a unique perspective, the ability of imagination at its full extent. The delicate natural imagery formed in my mind of “ancient” history before industrialism dominated the world, or merely my simulated descriptions of an unimaginable fantasy from a mesmerizing plot allows me to create the entire story in my mind, hence the plot, setting and characters become evermore intriguing. What I hope to achieve is to uncover the life stories of these ordinary people and connect my work with the overall research project for the course with the enhanced technological component. Lamentably, developing a competitive and resourceful wiki web page requires an enormous amount of time and so does the research on the lives of ordinary people. My ultimate goal will be to acquire the information, develop it into sensible writing, and publish it on our wiki project with as many pictorial, figurative, and advance media with time I am allotted.
