Art for the Community

When I was leaving class on Wednesday, I was really excited to see a table lined with people painting. My friend and I approached the table, and were told that the undergraduate student government at Baruch is supporting an organization that creates artwork and murals for children's hospitals and other children's institutions. The activity was to paint cartoon fish with watercolors so that they could be cut out and pasted into an underwater themed mural at a local organization.I think that it's wonderful that Baruch, a primarily business oriented school, was sponsering something that promoted the arts. I think one of the reasons I really love art is because it has so much power to impact how people of all ages feel. This activity, for instance, allows older students to realize how much fun creative expression for the benefit of others can be, and allows children the opportunity to be exposed to the arts in familiar environments. This activity also showed that anyone can be creative, whether one's work is on the same level as that of Picasso or Monet is not the issue. I personally just loved having the opportunity to paint these adorable fish with combinations of fun, bright colors. I hope to find more of these arts related community service events around campus!
