BAM BAM BAM

The performance we saw at BAM was one of the oddest shows I've ever seen. It was entertaining and interesting at some points, and mind-numbingly boring at others. Sometimes it was compelling, other times it was excruciatingly annoying. The most annoying part was definitely near the beginning when Marquise was moving in a circle and repeating the same few lines over and over and over and over... in French. A lot of people were bothered by the French, but I was kind of glad that my eyes had work to do because, though I was tired, it forced me to read the dialogue and be engaged with the show. Reading also helped because you don't miss anything that is being said. Sometimes, even if it's in English, you may not understand something an actor has said or may simply miss it. The dialogue was the most interesting part of the show. I thought the statements about religion and the Church and sexuality were greatly entertaining and also made you think. The conversations between Marquise and Valmont sounded almost like scholarly conversations about sexuality, humanity, sanctimony, cruelty etc. though obviously with a darkly comical and candid twist. I enjoyed much of the music during the show as well. Some of it added to the atmosphere and some of it was simply appealing to my ears. I must admit I was bobbing my head to some of the music that was played.

Onto to the negatives. As everyone has said, there was a lot of confusion. There wasn't much back story. We had to draw as much as possible from Valmont's and Marquise's conversations as to what was going on. I had no idea what was the point of the ghostly old man moving around the stage aimlessly. I didn't understand the frog leaping the characters were doing nor the noises they were making. Some of the crazy, thunderous laughs also were odd, though some of them were effective in showing the callousness of the characters when it came to abuse, cruelty, and exploitation. I didn't care for the other 2 characters; the virgin neice and the guy who I can't remember. For me the show was all about Valmont and Marquise and the music (because it sounded very hip-hop sometimes).
