BAM Harvey Theater: Quartett

There are many ways to describe my thoughts on the performance at the Harvey Theater, but the words that come to mind are amazing and confusing. I was really intrigued by the performance and the sound effects, which were often startling. If I remember correctly the first thing we hear was an extremely loud screeching sound that made me jump out of my seat. The costumes of the characters also grabbed my attention because of the vibrant colors and pale faces due to some makeup. Each character wore a single color, whether it was purple, green, red, or white. There was not too much planned for the scenery, but there were some changes they made throughout the play. As they changed the setting, the old man was dancing (to some good music might I add) and I didn't really catch the point of this. It seemed to me that they were trying to distract us from what was going on behind him, and I would say it kind of worked. What I liked best about the play was the language. Not necessarily the fact that it was not in english but because of the repetition of their lines, the loudness of their voice when screaming "vengeance", and the extremely fast pace at which they were capable of speaking. All these elements helped create effect as it forced to me to follow along with what they were saying and how they were acting. Another thing I noticed, as I am sure many others did as well, was the sexual innuendo in a many of the lines. Overall I thought it was a great performance, although I needed some explanations from my peers after the play.

I'm leaving now for a symphony at Lincoln Center so I'll see you there if anyone is going. I'll be sure to blog about it sometime later.
