DANCE @ CityCenter

In general I found the dance performance to be entertaining in the fact that it was different from what most would expect. I went into the theatre awaiting a typical ballet performance; however, I was surprised during the second and fourth performances. At first, I thought the second dance was rather strange and repetitive. Yet, once they started to change up the dance a bit, away from the "crazy-like running in place" move, I began to see the artists as performing interpretative dance. Personally, I found the second performance to be representative of a newborn come to life. The first move that was quite repetitive to me represented a fetus in a womb with it heart beating at a constant place. The movement of the arms and legs was a depiction of the growth of the fetus into a baby. Then as the dancers stretched their arms forward as if escaping a cave, it was like a baby actually being born. Other parts that I saw that were related was when the dancers were taking steps forward and back in the same place, not really gaining distance. I saw this to be lik when a child is learning to walk. Of course this was just my understanding throughout the piece, but that is the beauty of interpretive dance. Everyone sees it in their own way.

As for the last performance, I enjoyed it from the very beginning partly because of the attie of the dancers. All the vibrant colors and dangaling skirts were eye catching. Moreover, this performance was entertaining because it seemed to be a more native dance, embracing different cultures. Personally, I thought it portrayed an indian tribal dance more than anything else. Furthermore, what made this dance unique was that it intergrated many people rather than focus on two. All in all, the quick jabs and punches and high kicks and pauses and flashes made the performance quite memorable.
