Danzy Senna

Danzy Senna has a story to tell. A personal history of her pursuit to uncover the true identity of her grandmother, and in the process learn something about herself. She shivered her whole life through, reminded daily of the side of the family she did know, her mother's: The Howes of Boston, while painfully unaware of the side she did not: her father's. All she knew was that her family lived in the South, and her grandfather was supposedly a Mexican Boxer, who had left long ago. Throughout her narrative she jabs, crosses, and throws hooks of simple, yet incisive prose to create a blistering combination of stories in her bout with the truth. It was pure serendipity that i ended up attending her reading, and I was very pleased with the honesty and the personality that Mrs. Senna brought to the room. Throughout her reading, we were able to gain a brief understanding of the catharsis she experienced in exorcising the ghosts of her past, and by doing so, finally putting them to rest; awakening in the reader a sense of common humanity, and a success which we all may celebrate.
