Discovering the Unconventional Art of NYC

As I was walking around downtown, I passed a fruit stand and then noticed this truck parked on the street nearby. The urban/graffiti style artwork on the side of the truck instantly caught my attention because of the use of color and the unique and interesting character and style of writing used in the “mural.” The offbeat, weird creature painted on the truck was what really pulled my gaze toward the otherwise normal truck. I’m typically drawn to the unusual so this strange character quickly peaked my interest. Not only did I personally enjoy the artwork, but also I thought it perfectly fit under the title of “NYC art.” I think that this could be considered “NYC art” because it has a very urban vibe about it. Being from the suburbs of Ohio, I know that this is something I would only find in the city. The artwork is bold and different, two words which also characterize, in my opinion, New York City. I think that because this painting wouldn’t typically be considered a “work of art” is another reason that makes it such a good fit for the title of “NYC art.” The city seems to be all about pushing the limits of convention and creating new standards for the way society views the world. What better an example of this characteristic of the city than to place graffiti, which is often referred to as an act of vandalism that should be removed, into a category alongside all of the forms of art that are commonly accepted in society?
