An Eclectic Mess of Artwork

When I was walking downtown with my friend, we came across a really unique antique shop, Billy's. I've seen antique shops before, and I've always been really drawn to such eclectic groupings of objects from different time periods each with a story attached to it, but this shop really represented how NYC stands out as a city whose heart is full of love for art. As I walked further into the shop and was greeted by the shop owners rottweiler, I noticed how different this shop was than the others I've passed through before. There were vases, strange masks, figurines, subway signs, and furniture from several different decades. There was so much crammed into this space that the shop was filled from floor to ceiling. The statue in this photograph completely caught my attention. It was sitting on a platform suspended above the rest of the shop. The statue was huge and the fact that it's such a strange and creepy figure kept me staring for longer than any of the other objects around the room. I thought to myself as I looked around, this is why I love the city! There is so much here that is so different. Even the hodge-podge of items in a messy, dusty antique shop are so incredibly artsy and wonderful! It's so interesting to look at objects like this statue and consider their background and all of the different people who have encountered them. Art is something that links together people who otherwise have nothing in common, and I think that makes it such an important part of society. Maybe there isn't enough time to meet everyone you pass by on the street, but there is still a way to connect to others and to those who lived even before your time, and that's such a beautiful thing!
