Even though its not in NY, La Nouba in Orlando is still ART!

This weekend I embarked on a trip, however involuntary that it was, with my parents to Orlando, Florida to tend to some business. Friday night my mother decided that we would go see La Nouba, Cirque Du Soleil's spectacular in Downtown Disney. And yes, I know, its not New York, however, Cirque Du Soleil performs nationwide and has actually had shows in Randall's Island in our very own city. This is the third Cirque De Soleil show I have seen, and it is nothing short of brilliant art, if any of you have been able to bathe in Soleil glory, I dare you to disagree. In fact, I'm going to be as bold to say that this revolutionary circus is representative of New York art. Sure, we don't have trapeze artists performing on the street everyday, but the concept of Cirque Du Soleil as it being such an uncoventional and awe-inspiring circus not actually intended for kids speaks of the bold and avant-garde art being created in New York. One aspect that I adore about Cirque Du Soleil is the way that it is so representative and conveys such deep meaning for each one of its shows, each in a completely dissimilar aspect. La Nouba was a show centered on childhood, its dreams and possibilities. In one act, downward facing flying windows decorate the scenery while a gymnast couple swings from an open door, at times only being secured by holding on to the others feet. A lot of the scenery was representative of an unrealistic and sort of wonderland that children live in, including lots of silly comedy and vibrant colors. I adore the way in which Cirque De Soleil also creates all aspects of its performances live, much like a New York broadway or off broadway show would. There are live vocals and band playing, all to liven the mood for a magnificent group of circus artists. I wish that Cirque Du Soleil would have more performances in New York so it could become part of our artistic culture and be integrated so we could appreciate it as New York art as well. Who said New York art had to come from New York? After all, New York is a melting pot of cultures form around the world, this mixture is what makes New york what it is and its art as well. For me, Cirque Du Soleil falls nothing short of that category.
