Fall for Dance

Fall for dance was intense. It was so many different styles and interpretations of dance that it was like "BAM"-It hit you in the face. I loved that we got to see one of the more exciting programs that were held throughout Fall for Dance's run at City Center because my roommate was telling me about her experience and I found that mine was much better. Seeing the show made me miss dancing so badly and so i was feeling very melancholy but I knew that because watching the show had inspired me to dance again, I had appreciated the dancers' talent.

Les Biches was a little boring to me but I felt that it was because none of the ballet dancers in that piece were dancing well that night except for the lead girl in the blue velvet jumpsuit. Sh was the only reason that I kept watching...honestly. She was incredible but in a very disciplined way.  It felt like she wasn't dancing from the heart and that her attitude towards the dance was indifferent.  I personally believe that the level at which you perform has everything to do with your mental state.   I noticed the lead's composure and I felt that her thoughts were more structured than the other ballerinas' and that's why she was dancing so much better than the others.

The second act was puzzling to me. At first i was like  "WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY DOING? This is not dancing!!!" The two male dancers were running in place, flailing their limbs around and as you remember this went on for an extended period of time. Even now, after seeing the entirety of the piece and having a few days to mull it over, I still don't understand the director's intention...HOWEVER, the dancing was INCREDIBLE. AMAZING. BREATHTAKING. How those men moved their bodies left me speechless. It was so unstructured and uncoordinated too the point that it became beautiful. The dancers were so nimble and fluid that they became like water. I loved the way that their choreography fed off of one another.  It was my favorite piece in the show despite the running in place simply because it demonstrated their ability to a great extent. =)

The next ballet piece was enjoyable, I appreciated how the partner lifted her with such grace and how they moved almost as one. They executed one especially well and I was very impressed at that point because I know what a struggle it is to be a good partner.

After the ballet, the last act was the Mark Morris Dance Company. I absolutely did not expect it to be what it actually was. The pieces were a very interesting take on dance which I have never seen before. Additionally, after reading the assigned piece on Mark Morris, I understand a little bit more why the choreography was the way it was. I remember watching and thinking to myself "HOW does he come up with this stuff....it must be almost impossible!" His canons and variations of choreography that all somehow relate to one another yet never interfere...It was inspiring to watch.

I thoroughly enjoyed my Fall for Dance experience-thank you for revealing it to us- and I definitely want to go again next year.
