Film: Paranormal Activity

As I have said before, I'm somewhat disappointed that we do not touch upon the topic of film in this class.

Anyways, this weekend I went to see Paranormal Activity on Halloween night, perfect for the occasion. And yes, this movie was not of any quality at all whatsoever. I just had to go see it because of all the different feedback I was getting about it. I just had to go see it to decide for myself if I liked it or not. I also wanted to feel the thrill of watching a horror movie on the night of halloween. I went into the movie theater with the mindset that this movie was not going to completely freak me out, as other thriller movies have in the past. And I do admit, the movie could've been terrifying otherwise.

The movie was extremely inexpensive to make because it was such a simple movie. There was no real plot, only four characters were involved and not many special effects were needed to create it. It was an amateur movie that was excellently marketed to an audience that wanted thrill for Halloween. In truth, the movie was not about the film itself, since it was so simplistic and shallow, but it was the concept behind the movie, as well as the experience of seeing it. The suspense throughout the film is incredible, and very uncomfortable. Because of the buildup throughout the movie, anytime "paranormal" occurrences happened, the audience was frightened much more than they ordinarily would be. Furthermore, the "homemade" quality of the film makes it seem more realistic than it ought to be. In fact, the filmmakers added dates and names to the film to make it appear as though it was indeed a true story, which it obviously wasn't. The film exploits the comforts of a homey house and a loving couple and the familiarity of homemade films and terrorizes all the aspects of it. I found out that night that it was the after effect of the movie that really got to you if it didn't in the theater itself. The images of the movie are permanently scarred into your memory and you can't help but to think you're hearing things in the middle of the night, and even have trouble sleeping, like me. And you also don't forget to cover your feet with the covers.

If you want to get a good scare, go see the movie. The experience is similar to being in a haunted house, you know in the back of your head the things popping out at you are fictitious, yet they deceive you into believing they are real. If you want to see a good movie, then you're better off seeing something else.
