Frosting as an Artistic Medium

I have walked past a certain bakery, whose name I don't quite remember, almost every day on my way home from Baruch. It's on 3rd avenue, and what has always caught my eye are the window displays. Windows surround the store and on each shelf there are trays filled with the most unique food creations. Brightly colored, heavily frosted pastries, some of which I've never seen before in my life sit on every shelf of each window. The largest, more centralized window, though, has elaborately decorated multiple-tier wedding cakes prominently displayed to catch the attention of passersby. The particular pastries that caught my attention don't look very appetizing to me, but they are so unique! I don't know what they are made of, or what the strange little creatures are supposed to be, but it's incredible that the bakers who made them are so creative! I looked at the tray full of edible creatures and wondered how the baker found their inspiration, how long it takes to make each one, and also what on earth this pastry was! I was rushing by, but I had to stop and take a picture. I was so excited to see a form of art that was so unconventional and attention grabbing. I wonder how many people purchase these little pastries and gobble them up without any consideration or appreciation for the fact that what they just enjoyed was a small work of art. Generally, I don't think paint and paintbrushes can be equated with frosting and spatulas, but this tray full of pastries destroys that generalization. I would love to learn more about the process of baking and decorating in this style. It must be quite an interesting process that requires a great deal of skill, imagination and creativity. It's really awesome, an art form that uses frosting, food coloring, and cake batter as it's primary medium!
