Gallery Exhibit: SNAPSHOT

After my first initial negative reaction to Snap Shot Day at Macaulay, I have calmed down. I was upset because I felt the event was organized poorly. I also felt as though they just wanted us to use our flip cams and Mac lab top applications rather then use our real creativity. I for one am not particularly creative on a Sunday morning. Since I work all day Saturdays, I love sleeping in on Sundays. So I suppose most of my disappointment came from the fact that I had to wake up so early. Beyond this, I did appreciate viewing other people's interpretations of the theme, "my neighborhood." I think our class definitely had the most out-of-the-box inspiration for the assignment.  There was one photograph, however, I loved. It featured a few men sitting outside a cafe. I am not sure if the photograph had been manipulated, but it appeared to be in sepia. The sun was bright and it looked like one of those perfect street scenes you would stroll by, but never pay attention to. There was another photograph I thought was interesting of a close up of a girl in her white ray-ban sunglasses. The angle at which she took the photograph was interesting, coming in from above and to the right side of her nose. I could not really understand the significance. Was she her neighborhood? Was she hiding her identity, commenting on different identities in neighborhoods? Did neighborhoods have specific identities? Regardless, it was captivating. The group I worked with used both of these photographs in our film clip. During the editing process for the clip, I took the role of splicing the segments. I have edited one film clip in the past, and I always forget how much attention to detail is involved in videography. All of the visual and performing arts pay close attention to detail. I think thats what differentiates the good from the bad. Above all, the entire day was an experience. Whether it will be memorable or not is certainly up for debate. Next year, I think they should just hold a normal gallery opening with cheese and crackers. I would come to that!
