"Home", not your Neighborhood

When our IDC class was given the "Snapshot NYC" assignment, I was curious to see how it would play out. I thought it was an intriguing idea that we could have an assignment that was supposed to portray our neighborhood, be about something else completely, that still spoke of "home" to you. It took me some time to figure out what it was that I was trying to capture; a flower, an ornate object, the water, what was there in NYC that spoke of the "ideal" neighborhood to me. I was surprised upon my findings, actually. New York, despite being known as a metropolitan cities has certain characteristics to it that don't necessarily speak of the typical bustling New York atmosphere. New York of filled with eclectic neighborhoods where you can find every type of atmosphere possible. There's China town, Little Italy, Harlem, Spanish Harlem, Washington Heights and outside of Manhattan itself there's the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and so many other neighborhoods that at first glance seem that they couldn't possibly be located in the city of New York. Where I currently reside, in Yonkers, the neighborhood is extremely quiet and peaceful. Everyone travels by car, and rarely is anyone seen walking through the streets. The neighborhood is quite slow paced. Once I reach the city, on my commute to school, however, everything changes. Suddenly people are half running on their way to work, dodging everyone in sight. Personally, I love my actual neighborhood. Even though its quite far from school, I enjoy the feeling it gives me when I'm there. Its very tranquil and once I'm home, I feel isolated from the stress and the rushed life of Manhattan. In the summer, sometimes I feel like I'm at a vacation home rather than a regular apartment because thats just the kind of mood thats set my the way my apartment is architecturally set up. This precise feeling is what I unconsciously portrayed in the photograph I gave in as my actual Snapshot to Macaulay. There is most definitely a feeling of isolation, and a lack of any disturbance in the surroundings, except for the view of tall skyscrapers across the shore.
