House of the Dead Opera

Let me start off by saying Lincoln Center is absolutely just gorgeous. Even though it was raining, the sight of the center was just amazing. It was like nothing i've ever seen before. The seats that were provided to us by Macaulay were also absolutely amazing to enhance our visit to the Opera. It was my first ever Opera and it was one to remember. I was told by a few of my classmates that the very own Meryl Streep was present in the Opera sitting in the 4th row. I didn't get to see her for myself though. The atmosphere in the Opera was just absolutely incredible. EVERYONE was dressed up nicely and professionally. There was not one slob in there. The little screens also helped during the play as it provided a translation up close. The setting on the stage was amazing as it provided a captivating space for all. I did not imagine the Opera to be the way it was even though it was discussed in class that a lot of the actors would be watching other actors perform. I imagined the typical Opera where a larger sized woman would be singing. As the Opera began and the actors were roaming around, they looked as if they were real zombies. They had the swag of a dead person until the lights turned on and things became normal. What I was really surprised was the fact that all the men kept taking on and off their clothes, to the point where they were wearing absolutely nothing on stage. I never knew that they were allowed to do that in an Opera. All the jail inmates would be showering on stage and just be so close to each other. This showed the struggle that the prisoners went to and how scrunched up they were in prison. Another scene that was interesting, was when the actors were performing in front of the other actors. There was a man that played a woman wearing woman's clothes and having men with her. This reminded me of The Hard Nut where there were a lot of men that played the roles of women. I found it quite amusing that there were actors sitting on bleacher-like seats and watching the act just like we were. But most of all, it was the scene that was amusing the most. The eagle or bird also served as an important item in the Opera. All the prisoner inmates were just following the bird, as if hoping they will one day be free like the bird is. I'd have to say that this experience was truly enjoyable. The only thing that I had a little trouble with, was the leg room in the seating. Yes, it is not that big of a deal and doesn't have a huge effect on the Opera itself, but I found it extremely uncomfortable to have such little room for my legs. Overall, the Opera was an amazing experience that I will surely attend again.
