How Artwork Blends into the City

I really love how walking around the city allows for encounters with artwork, even when I am not specifically looking for it. I feel as though the environment of the city so much fosters creativity that it is not uncommon to see artwork even on the sidewalks we walk on every day. This flower that was somehow painted on the ground became a small part of the city. The footprints in the paint from before it had dried, give the flower imperfections that make it more real. The dirtiness of the gum mashed into it's center show that this act of pretty self-expression cannot help but take on the not so pleasant traits of the city too. Everything that is put into this environment becomes representative of how the city exists as one massive entity. Every element of the city blends into its surroundings and suddenly becomes inseperable as an individual object. I love how I just stumbled upon this piece of artwork, but if I had been rushing past while listening to my iPod I never would have noticed. It was only when I purposely set out to really absorb my surroundings that I came across this little display. I wonder who did it and when. It seems like maybe the "artist" in question might not have thought much of the work they were doing, but on the other hand, maybe they knew that this little flower would be able to brighten the day of passersby with it's innocent color and pop of sunshine in its center. It's funny how much thought can be provoked by such a simple sidewalk painting. I think that this helps to show that artwork is surrounding us, just waiting to be discovered and considered. It's impossible to see anything, though, if we aren't willing to look.
