Independent Event #1: Precious

Last week, I went to go see the film Precious. Before last week, I had no idea what the movie was nor did I know what it was about. However, Stephanie brought the idea up to go watch it along with Natasha. The three of us walked to the theater to watch Precious which was featured in Sundance, Toronto and Cannes Film Festivals. It won many awards and was based on a novel titled Push

As I entered the theater and sat in my seat, I had no idea what was going to appear on the screen. I asked Stephanie and she just plain out said "just watch the movie!". As a result, I turned back around and stared blankly at the screen until the movie started. The film was quite an inspiring one that featured an obese African American girl who was abused and illiterate. One thing that was quite artistic was when the director showed a happy scene as a replacement of an abuse scene to Precious Jones. The director would show Precious Jones dressed up all nice and pretty walking down a red carpet as if she was famous while in reality, she is having a hard time. Yes, Precious Jones is a living a horrible life, but she continues to pursue a happy one as she is unwilling to give up. Throughout her life, she has suffered sexual abuse from her father, physical abuse from her father and illiteracy that has caused her to have a huge struggle. As a result of the sexual abuse from her father, she gave birth to two kids which she had to take care of despite the fact that she is poor and her mother is a crazy person.

As life progresses for Precious Jones, she gets kicked out of her previous school and is forced to attend an alternative school after getting pregnant for the second time. As she is just sitting in a chair, not knowing what to do, the teacher, Ms. Rain, forces her to enter the classroom. Precious Jones enters the classroom which is full of other troubled students. Ms. Rain's approach is different than that of the other teachers in that she is trying to help all of these troubled kids to read and write. As a result, she gives Precious confidence instead and she ends up turning on her mother after years of abuse.

In the end, I was content with the performances of the actors in the movie as they played their roles well. It is truly an inspiring movie that allows each and everyone of us to be thankful for the lives that we live now.
