Independent Visit #3: American Folk Art Musuem

On Tuesday, I was so excited to go visit the MOMA to view the Tim Burton exhibit currently on display. I have watched all of Tim Burtons movies and I loved all of them, (my favorite being The Nightmare Before Christmas)  so I knew it would be something I would really enjoy. Well apparently the MOMA is closed on Tuesdays, who knew. I was so disappointed and sad that I made the journey there for nothing ! As I walked down 53 street with some of my fellow classmates, I stumbled across another museum. It was the American Folk Art Museum, which I didn't even know existed. It was really nice and it displayed artwork that was very different from what we've been viewing in class. On the first floor above the staircase was a painting titled, Girl in Red Dress with Cat and Dog by Ammi Philips. It was a portrait of a little girl sitting in a bright red dress with a red beaded necklace awkwardly posing and holding a cat in her arms. The shoulders of the dress are exaggerated and her feet almost seem invisible because of how her black shoes blend in with the floor. The painting is unique and I was really interested in the background of the painting. I just found it unsettling for reasons I did not know and still do not know. Maybe it was because the little girl's face looked so innocent but then she's in this bold dress holding an uncute ( to put it nicely) cat that is completely white..and a dog on the floor. I'm not sure but it was an odd painting and it just stood out to me in contrast to everything else that was there. Everyone should go check it out !
