Macaulay Reading Event

The event on Thursday was pretty interesting to say the least. Each poet who recited their work had a different style and way of delivering their poems. My favorite from all of the artists at the event was the second one, Jamal. He recited his work with such a fast pace that it almost seemed like he was freestyle rapping. I enjoyed this aspect of when he read and it made me pay attention even more closer. I loved how his poems touched on the subject of war and those effected by it because it was completely uncensored and felt like it was an "in your face" type of poem. The other artist that stuck out to me was Natalie. She was a Native American who touched on various subjects in her life. Her first poem was about Halloween and how she used a hand-me down from her neighbor Jeremiah. She spoke of how she was made fun of for using a hand-me down costume. Her second poem was also very personal and was about her brother who is addicted to crystal-meth and her third poem was about her other brother who is in the army. Although I enjoyed the text of her poems, I did not enjoy the way she recited them. It is hard to describe why I did not like the way she recited them but to put it best it was almost as if she was trying to recite it in a rhythmic way that did not appeal to me. The other two poets were also very talented as well. When the first artist read her final poem, I have to admit it left me with unpleasant images in my head, to say the least. Although the poem was very hard to hear, it spoke of a subject that affects women everywhere. The second poet was also unique in her way of delivering her work by singing in certain sections. I overall enjoyed the event and it was definitely something new too me. Even though some of the artists appealed to me more than the others, I still appreciate the work each of them produce and their creativity in making such unique written pieces of art.
