MET Challenge! Who's brave enough to brave the Met?

I issue a challenge, hoping to inspire you to return to the Met as soon as possible!  Remember, it's pay what you wish, so give a dollar... two... ten... whatever!

The challenge is simple: find my favorite painter.  It's by an American artist whose style is catagorized as Abstract Expressionist, but it's not the most famous painter in the style, whose drip canvases exemplify both Abstract Expressionism and "Action Painting."  Instead my painter's style overlaps with "color field" painting.  It's less action-packed, more meditative.  But still, (hint!) it's not like looking through Rothko's windows, nor the thin straight lines of Newman -- more like peering through a tear in the fabric of the canvas, of reality. The paintings are often dark, although sometimes the white canvas dominates.  The shapes are at once violent and brutal as well as natural and organic, like stalagmites in a cave or castles made from dripping wet sand.

Who is my favorite painter?
