music: my favorite form of art

On thursday, my english professor gave us the opportunity to attend "Lets Get Free: A Hip Hop Theory of Justice" at John Jay College for extra credit. It was about the art of hip-hop and the underlying message it can sometimes convey. I often forget how music is just like all other forms of art, it expresses a message just like paintings and photographs can. When you read the lyrics of some songs, its often the artist expressing how he or she feels about issues. In the event I attended, they talked about how songs by artists such as Erykah Badu talk about the daily issues that African Americans deal with because of the injustices they often face. When I was reading the lyrics of her song, I was surprised at how powerful her words were and how they made you feel what she was talking about. All music to me expresses some type of emotion whether happy or sad or also a stance about certain issues. I love that about music, i love the creative aspect of it and how they could turn a message into a catchy song like "where is the love?" by black eyed peas or "I heard em say" by Kanye West there is just so much to appreciate about it. I think that music is probably the most influential type of art because so many of us listen to all types of music and we do it constantly as well. Everyone should appreciate music for the art form that it is and how it can sometimes bring a positive message to its audience :)
