Poetry Reading at Macaulay

Before attending the common event for Macaulay, I was a little unsure of how exciting a poetry reading would be. After hearing the first poem, though, I was reassured that this would be a good experience. Her style was unique, and although I didn't quite understand the message of everything she read, I was definitely captivated by her use of language as an art form. As the other poets stood at the podium and recited there work I was impressed and very moved at times, but I felt most moved by the final, Native American poet. Her writing was not as eloquent upon first listening, but it was so very real. I could feel her through the words and could see how much of her soul she had poured into the work. Her poem about her first Halloween off of the reservation was powerful. Listening to her read the poem was like experiencing what she had been through. It was very emotional for me, and I have no idea what it's like to be discriminated against. I was just so moved by how willing she was to so openly share so much personal and very raw feelings. She even gave background on her poems, which I felt added to how personal the experience. I felt lik the other poets had beautiful words, but I couldn't really connect with the majority of what they said because it felt like their work was too far immeresed in the stylistic side of poetry. The Native American's poems were beautiful and stylistically impressive, but they had a far more rough and natural feel. The way she read also helped to really engage my emotions in the reading. Her reading was sharp and abrupt which kept me listening and really focused on every word. I felt like because she read this way I was able to really understand what her message was without having to battle with a lot of symbolism and metaphor. It was really beautiful how she, and every poet was very engrossed in their work. I really loved the whole experience, and I thought the writers' real passion for their work was impressive. I didn't think a poetry reading would evoke so much emotional response for me, but this experience was far different from my conventional opinion of how a poetry reading would occur.
