Quartet: A Confusing Experience That I Can Appreciate

Quartet left me so confused! I was completely captivated by the performance, but I had a really hard time understanding what was going on! I was under the impression that there would be only two actors playing different roles, and the presence of the three other characters kind of threw me off. The whole beginning scene was a little unsettling to me and the strange sound effects kind of scared me. The laughter from the characters seemed so evil, and when members of the audience laughed I really didn't understand why. Despite all of the confusion and the feeling of "this is the weirdest thing I've ever seen," I really enjoyed the performance. The repetition of words and the use of light, music, and costume meshed in a very unique and intriguing way. I think perhaps it would have helped to read the play before going, but I'm not sure that would have helped me feel more clear or if it would have only added to the confusion. One thing I did notice was the use of silence. I remember not fully understanding this concept when reading about the play, but visualizing it helped. Moments of silence followed by powerful loud yells or a burst of music made it apparent when I should be really paying close attention. Also, darkness seemed to be an important element of the production. Not only did it suggest scene changes, but it also reflected role shifts and mood changes.I am eager to discuss more about what others thought of the production, and to develop a more clear understanding of the "meaning" behind the play. It was interesting to me how I could understand the dialogue, thanks to the subtitles, but yet I knew there was something much deeper than the simple sentences going on. I couldn't clearly decipher what was hidden in the words, but I was aware that there was definitely significance in all of it. In other words, despite the apparent silliness of the happenings on stage, I understood that the play was actually very deep and meaningful. My overall feeling about the event is one of appreciation. I am happy that I was able to see somehting so different, because anything that can be described as "bizarre" or "weird" or "unique" is undeniably appealing to me!
