RENT: The Art of Filmmaking

I do not know if everyone considers film an art, but I definitely do. If art is self-expression, it is the director, the screenwriter, and everyone else apart of the movie's team that is attempting to convey a message. If I had to pick any movie that convey an amazing message, Rent would be at the top of my list. Rent is my favorite film I have seen to date. A musical set in 1989-1990 New York City, this film details one year in the life of eight friends. Seven of which who are non-conformists, struggle with the hardships of life--poverty, hunger, drugs, and even AIDS. Four of the friends are HIV-positive. However, the main point of the film is not to discuss the hardships of life. The theme of the movie is "No Day but Today", meaning to live each day to the fullest as if it were your last. These friends outside of the trader Benny, do not conform to life's standards. They are artists, and they don't agree with living each day in a "three-piece" suit. They choose to struggle, only for the prospect of living life how they want. Immediately after I saw this movie, I knew it would be my favorite movie of all time. I believe the message is excellent. Too many times, people live life "conforming." They live each day repeating the same routine continously. They toast to the bohemian lifestlye, and salute the various aspects of it. Rent is the ultimate film of self-expression and being in individual. It teaches that even through the hardships of life, one can still find happiness. It has great numbers, from my favorite Another Day, to Seasons of Love, to the amazing number La Vie Boheme. Anyone who has not seen this great film, rent it, today !
