Third Independent Event: American Folk Art Museum

I still do not really understand the concept behind the American Folk Art Museum. It is obvious that the art deals with folk art, however, I do not know the real definition of folk art. It was an unexpected visit. A group of us from the IDC class planned to make a trip to see the Tim Burton exhibit at the MOMA. However, we did not realize it was closed on Tuesdays. Next door happened to be the American Folk Art Museum, and when we look on our cultural passports, it happened to be first on the list. Most of the artwork reminded me of a Native American and prairie farm inspiration. There were many quilts and paintings of farms. The drawings of children were sort of eerie. Their faces showed solitude in a very creepy instead of innocent way. The landscape paintings had muted bright colors. The drawings reminded me of very early American paintings. This musuem did not really interest me. I was not fond of the type of era the museum focused on. I was already disappointed that we could not see the highly anticipated Tim Burton exhibit. Therefore, when this museum did not live up to the MOMA standards, I was sadly disappointed. However, it was a new experience and if the MOMA was not closed, I probably would have never taken the time to go inside.
