Visit to the MoMA

This was my first trip to the MoMA and I really enjoyed it! I'm sure that I could go back and see even more that I didn't notice my first time around, and I look forward to visiting again to view the Tim Burton exhibit. I went to the museum with my friend, and as we were walking around we discussed why some of the strange, and, at times, simple pieces were deemed "art." I asked her why one image was different from any other we see in our day to day lives and she said "because they put a frame around it!" Instantly I was reminded of the reading about "discursive spaces." I think that the pieces in the MoMA definitely seem more prestigious because they are associated with such a well-known museum, and because of the way they are displayed. Honestly there was a lot of "artwork" that I was not moved by at all. A lot of it was really "out-there" and I felt like maybe the people viewing it were trying a little too hard to give some deep meaning to a square of color on a canvas, or to a collage of pop-culture images. I loved the pieces that incorporated lots of color and used very out-of-the-ordinary images. I think that the really weird art that left me confused was still worth seeing because it really got me thinking more about what "art" really is. I was really excited to see "classic" pieces by Dali and Picasso because it was a really wonderful experience that not everyone has the chance to have. Overall, I had a really good time at the museum and it inspired me to explore more of the museums and exhibits the city has to offer!
