What do you think New York art is?

One of the most distinctive art forms of New York is its street art. This kind of art extends to graffiti, sidewalk art, chalk art and the sort. I find that this art form is one that exemplifies freedom of expression because it stems from spontaneous feelings and emotions that overcome an individual. Additionally, this art form is one that is appreciated by the masses since it beautifies our neighborhoods and communities.  As people walk across the street, they enjoy the view of an intensely, colored wall besides a school. This wall art contains images of school children with books and pencils and numbers and the alphabet, all images that provoke positive sentiments.  As one walks into the subway, there stands graffiti with names of people who hold pride in their self and are not afraid to embrace their difference. As one takes a stroll around the playground, one stumbles upon the artistic creations of children whose imagination runs wild. The chalked ground contains bright red roses, yellow suns, and stick figures holding hands; such images of innocence can only call forth smiles. In essence, the street art is what makes New York unique because it is a representation of the different types of people that dwell in the city.

<!--StartFragment-->But street art is not just about beauty but about the depth of meaning behind them. Some pieces evoke powerful messages like for instance, the power of drug abuse or philosophical lessons on life. Other works offer admirable illustrations of socially powerful individuals. Around my neighborhood, I have witnessed a man paint portraits of individuals on a single square of the sidewalk. Some of the fortunate figures include Hillary Clinton and Obama, as side-by-side depictions, and Michael Jackson, the king of pop. Though an outsider may not believe it to be so, but the skill demonstrated in these drawings are admirable, for the representation is undeniable. Hence, it is these kind of unexpected artworks that catch us off guard and remind us of the beauty inside. <!--EndFragment-->
