From The Integration of Dominican, Chinese, Russian and Mexican Immigrants in NYC

Hello, my name is Kevin. I am currently 19 years old and live with my parents who immigrated here from Hong Kong. It was during the year of 1978 when BOTH of my parents immigrated to New York City. To be clear, they did not come together. My dad lived in the lower east side near the tenements while my mother lived in Chinatown. At first, they struggled to integrate into the U.S. because of the language barrier. They couldn't speak a drop of English. However, by the time they graduated from Stony Brook University, they were able to speak somewhat fluent English. Today, my dad works at New York Life located on 28th street and Madison as an accountant. My mother works in a smaller company, also as an accountant. Overall, my parents have integrated into American society fairly well.
